Nutritional Information
We have a 4 week rotating menu at Room to Grow. Our menu provides a morning snack a lunch and an afternoon snack. Children who are enrolled in full time child care will receive 2/3 of their nutritional requirements while in attendance.
Our centres must adhere to the food and nutrition standards established by the minister. Each snack must be nutritious and provide servings from at least 2 of the food groups identified by health Canada including at least 1 serving of fruit or vegetables. Lunch must also be nutritious and provide servings from each of the food groups identified by health Canada.
Our menu meets the standards established by sections 25, 26 and 27 of the Day Care Act and Regulations.
All staff who prepares food has obtained a Nova Scotia handling training certificate.
When medical, religious or cultural beliefs require a child to bring food from home. Foods must be labelled with the Child’s name and refrigerated.
When our centre purchase or receive donations of food or beverages from an outside source, such as a caterer or parent, the food must be from an establishment permitted by the department of agriculture and comply with the food and beverage nutrient criteria. The centre must ensure that the product includes a list of ingredients and any special preparation, storage or serving instructions are clearly labelled.
- Our staffs are responsive to children’s cues around hunger and provide snacks and meals outside of the regular schedule as required.
- Our staffs encourage children to respond to hunger and feelings of fullness and the children are not forced to finish food that has been served.
- Our staff will consume the same foods as the children unless they have special dietary considerations that prevent them by doing so.
- Our staffs create a relaxing and enjoyable meal environment (e.g., plan for transitions in routine from play to meal/snack).
If your child requires supplements or special foods due to a medical condition, you will be responsible for providing them. The staffs eat with the children to help model appropriate eating behaviours and positive food habits. Staff do not force children to eat or withhold favourite foods for inappropriate behaviours, but will encourage children through positive modelling and reinforcements to try new and other foods. Please keep us informed about any food allergies.
